Join us to celebrate 50 years of Stressless furniture!

The Haskins team is proud to have been the largest stockist of Stressless furniture in Somerset since the 1930s and we’re so excited to be joining in with the global celebrations of the brand’s 50th anniversary!

This milestone event marks five decades of innovation, craftsmanship and distinctive Norwegian design – a powerful combination that has made Stressless one of the most celebrated furniture companies in the world.

What makes Stressless furniture unique?

If you’ve ever owned a piece of Stressless furniture, you’ll have experienced first-hand the second-to-none comfort the brand is famous for.

In 1971, Stressless founder Jens E. Ekornes set out to produce the world’s most comfortable chairs, sofas and dining chairs. His philosophy was that daily relaxation is essential to human well-being, and this shaped his mission to harness the science of comfort and movement and bring complete relaxation into his customers’ lives.

And that’s exactly what the brand has been doing ever since.

50 years of Stressless innovation

Stressless was introduced to the world as the first recliner designed to meet the human body’s need for movement and support when seated. Over the years, the company has continued to combine the study of human anatomy with engineering expertise. The result is a range of patented technologies and innovative features that allow Stressless recliners, sofas and chairs to adjust with almost every movement of the body.

50 years of Stressless craftsmanship

There are two generations of expertise among Stressless employees, and this experience is poured into the manufacture of every single product. Specialists in woodworking, design, engineering and upholstery work in harmony with state-of-the-art technology to ensure every chair, sofa and dining chair meets the rigorous quality standards the company sets itself.

From the unique wood-processing technology that gives Stressless frames extra strength, to the meticulously selected leather that’s wear-tested 24,000 times, this is furniture that’s built to last a lifetime.

50 years of Norwegian design

Stressless design has always stayed true to the company’s Nordic roots, continuing the rich tradition of Norwegian design that’s internationally renowned as the perfect fusion of style, functionality and quality.

Inspiration for the clean, minimalist aesthetic of Stressless furniture comes from nature. In particular, from the magnificent fjord, breath-taking mountains and dramatic coastline that define the Sykkylven municipality in Norway: the home of Stressless for five decades.

Bespoke Furniture with G Plan Upholstery

In our consumerist world of convenience and choice, we have all become used to being able to get what we want, when we want it and to the standard we expect it. The trouble is with this kind of mass-produced line of products, when it comes to furniture, is that those of us who want to reflect a bit more personality in our living spaces all end up with the same furniture as all our neighbours. Handcrafted, bespoke G Plan items may come with a higher price tag, but the value that you receive with something like, for example, G Plan Upholstery living room furniture, goes far beyond price.

G Plan is a brand with a long history dating back to 1898, when Ebenezer Gomme made his name with fine, handcrafted furniture items. His grandson, Donald, founded the G Plan brand in 1953, and since then it has gone from strength to strength. If you choose a piece of furniture from the G Plan Upholstery range, then you are getting not only that wonderful, handcrafted furniture item, but also a 10-year frame and spring guarantee. You can be absolutely assured of their quality, as they say in their own advertising – “Relax, it’s a G Plan.”

All G Plan items are handcrafted in the UK, and make use of the highest possible quality materials in their design and construction. But why does any of this matter? Why is a handcrafted bespoke piece of furniture a better option than something mass produced?

Firstly, handcrafted furniture tells a story. In the case of G Plan, it represents an incredible history; a development of a family business that is now a household name. Each item represents the love, care and skill of its craftsman, and that is something that will truly enhance your living space.

Secondly, perhaps more practically, is that handcrafted and/or bespoke items are nearly always produced in a more ethical manner than mass-produced furniture. For instance, all G Plan furniture is made from responsibly sourced hardwood, and because it’s handcrafted, you know you are not getting a product that is the result of exploitation or controversial production means. What’s more, despite each individual piece being carefully crafted by experienced carpenters, all items are up to ISO 9001 standards, ensuring your peace of mind for both quality and safety.

Anyone who is considering a handcrafted or bespoke furniture item is doing it for an important reason – they want their furniture and living space to stand out; to tell a story and to evoke powerful emotion. They want their purchase to become a family heirloom, a lasting legacy of family memories and happy times together. Browse our G Plan Upholstery range today, and explore the options available to get you the perfect item to tell your own story.

Caring for your Halo Furniture

Here’s how to care for your halo furniture; in our consumerist world of convenience and choice, we have all become used to being able to get what we want, when we want it and to the standard we expect it. The trouble is with this kind of mass-produced line of products, when it comes to furniture, is that those of us who want to reflect a bit more personality in our living spaces all end up with the same furniture as all our neighbours. Handcrafted, bespoke items may come with a higher price tag, but the value that you receive with something like, for example, G Plan Upholstery living room furniture, goes far beyond price.

When we’re buying furniture, we have no qualms about choosing the items we think look best and will really enhance our living spaces. However, one thing we don’t always consider is how best to care for the furniture items we choose so that their life may be prolonged, and how they keep looking their finest for longer.

Halo dining room furniture is no exception. Every item may be made with love, craftsmanship and care, but a degree of extra vigilance is needed in order to maximise their life and effect. Halo came up with a general list of tips that should help to prolong the life of all their furniture items:

  • Avoid placing any item too close to a direct source of heat, such as a radiator
  • Do not place items in direct sunlight, as it can accelerate fading in wood and leather
  • If assembling items, it is essential that you follow the instructions precisely
  • Once assembled, hot dishes or cups should not be placed directly onto any wooden surfaces such as cabinet or table tops
  • In the event of a stain, scratch, chipping or any other damage, it’s best to call a professional to try and resolve the problem
  • Avoid sharp objects on upholstered furniture as they may snag the fabric

In addition to the above guidelines, there are more things that one can do to care for their Halo furniture. Looking more carefully at leather upholstery, one important thing to remember is only to clean it when absolutely necessary. It’s okay to dust/vacuum it occasionally, or to use a soft, slightly damp cloth to wipe the surface gently. If the leather gets wet, then use a paper towel to wipe up any excess water, and then leave to dry naturally.

Wood and glass materials should also be considered carefully. Halo wooden furniture is finished with either lacquer or wax to protect the wood, while also maintaining its natural beauty. Following already mentioned (above) guidelines on keeping wood out of heat/sunlight, and ensuring that mats are used for hot/wet dishes that are placed on them will keep all unnecessary wear and tear to a minimum. Glass is often something overlooked, as people assume it can be cleaned with any kind of detergent or cloth without any risk. The truth is that glass panel surfaces should only be cleaned with a damp, soft cloth with washing up liquid, soft soap or window cleaner. Other washing powders or detergents with abrasives should be avoided. While they are effective cleaning agent, their abrasives may well scratch the glass and ruin the finish!

Put simply, you don’t have to be a master craftsman in order to make sure your Halo furniture stays in good order. Through these simple care steps, your living space will be brought to life by the beautiful items in the Halo Living range. Browse our Halo dining furniture now and make an order with us today.

ercol-originals

A Spotlight On Ercol Originals

In order to aim our spotlight accurately at these “Ercol Originals,” it’s probably a good idea to first understand what exactly they are. The range consists of chairs, love seats, rocking chairs, stools and tables, and represents the revitalization of some of Lucian Ercolani’s earliest and best-known designs. Together, they create – in Ercol’s own words – a “Pantheon of classic designs of the 20th Century.”

The Butterfly Chair, Studio Couch, Chairmakers Chair, Holland Park Chair – the list goes on. These iconic British classics remain highly sought after for their beautiful yet simple designs, the quality of their materials, and finally for their durability, practicality and ease of integration into the design of the home. How did such a simple but varied range emerge in the first place? The simple answer is that Ercolani adapted the country Windsor chair into a design that could be produced more easily and in greater numbers but without compromising on quality. The overall simplicity of the Windsor meant that the scope for adaptive design was massive, hence the amazing variety in the Ercol Originals range today.

Taking the range down to its more fundamental levels, the principal materials used in the Originals range are beech and elm. The former is a hard, very solid wood with a fine and versatile structure. It is wear-resistant, and many furniture craftsmen over the centuries have come to acknowledge its superior qualities when it comes to processing, finishing and gluing. The latter is also a tough and durable material, but is known more for its smooth surface, fluent, clear lines and the air of elegance that it brings to anything made from it.

Finally, when taking a careful look at the Originals range, one really can’t help but remark on just how simple and bold the designs really are. Why is this a strength? Many would argue that a simple design makes something easier to understand; easier to see the beauty and fundamental strength in something. On a more practical level, the simpler the design, the less likely the item to let you down, but also the easier it is to fix should anything go wrong for whatever reason.

Simple, durable, timeless and versatile – the Ercol Originals bring all the most desirable elements of beauty, design and practicality into your home. Take the time to browse the selection and see which items can enhance any part of your living space.

Ercol Bosco Bedroom

The Ercol Bosco Bedroom range is both stylish and distinctive due to the incorporation of exposed finger joints, smooth curved edges, easy-to-pull handles and slatted headboards.

Finished in a clear matt lacquer, the beauty of the solid oak and oak veneers is embraced throughout the Ercol Bosco bedroom range.

Ercol Savona Bedroom

The Ercol Savona Bedroom range is Ercol’s extension of the Ercol story into the bedroom: the harmony and balance of style, function and comfort. The inspiration was to create a collection befitting today’s modern living.

The Ercol Savona furniture is the result of a collaboration between Ercol and James Ryan, a young British designer. The pieces are simple, incorporating clean lines and symmetrical curves whilst still celebrating the traditional craftsmanship Ercol is renowned for.

Ercol Bronte

The Ercol Bronte bedroom collection establishes Ercol’s design credentials; this bedroom suite embraces classic features such as dovetail joints and deep drawers making it ideal for the modern, casual bedroom.

The collection is completed with a tinted matt lacquer to both increase durability and allow the distinctive finishing of the soft toned ash wood to shine through.

Ercol: Dedicated to Craftsmanship and Collaboration

From its humble beginnings in 1920, Ercol furniture has steadily grown to become an enterprise at the very forefront of the British furniture industry. Founded by Italian immigrant, Lucian Ercolani, who moved to London with his parents in 1898, the company has expanded to include living room, dining room, bedroom and office furniture. Their design ethos states that they “design for comfort; design for function; design for beauty,” and their dedication to quality and craftsmanship is a testament to that ethos.

Rather than being taken over by another corporate entity at some point, the Ercolani family remains at the very centre of operations. In the company’s long history, Lucian Ercolani, his sons and their in-house design teams have produced some of the most iconic British furniture – the Butterfly Chair, the Stacking Chair, the Windsor Series, the Plank table and many more. The company has a proven track record of dedication to maintaining good design and production standards by rewarding their long-standing employees with a place in a kind of hall of fame, a wooden plaque made from English elm listing the names of those who have served the company for more than 30 years.

Not only a commitment to craftsmanship, the company is also committed to the value of collaboration. As the company has developed and expanded, the Ercolani family recognised the advantages of looking to both upcoming and well-known designers in the UK to bring new designs and perspectives to the Ercol furniture ranges. Talented professionals such as Margaret Howell, James Ryan, and Matthew Hilton, who won “Designer of the Year” at the 2008 British Design Awards, have all collaborated with Ercol to either bring brand-new concepts to the range. Ryan can be credited with the creation of the flagship Artisan range, with its beautiful curves and shapes made from solid wood – a hallmark of Ryan’s style. Howell helped rework items from the back catalogue to make them available to an international market that previously hadn’t been able to take advantage of Ercol’s fantastic craftsmanship and style.

Ercol has proven itself a forward-thinking enterprise, able to evolve to meet the needs of changing markets by bringing in fresh perspectives, and holding on to its best talent to maintain the highest possible standards. Haskins Furniture is fortunate to be able to stock a great deal of Ercol’s designs having maintained a trading relationship since the 1950s. Through this, Haskins Furniture have collaborated with Ercol in a number of outside events to display the Ercol ranges at National Trust properties including Lawrence Weston House, Montacute House, Stourhead Palladian Mansion and Bowood House. Browse our website to view the iconic Ercol designs.

How to Design a Living Room that’s as Unique as You Are

How to design a living room: it’s the one room that most of us especially want to reflect our personality and taste. Or, more accurately, we want it to show our unique style. With the sheer amount of mass-produced furniture flooding the market every year, it’s hard to really know if we’re buying pieces that reflect ourselves, because after all, won’t thousands of other people have the same thing?

If it’s unique furniture you’re looking for, then look no further than the Parker Knoll furniture range. Parker Knoll fabrics are sourced from the finest mills across the world, and are selected according to strict criteria in design, enduring quality and ultimate comfort. Parker Knoll’s unique spring system created new standards of comfort, and the continuing craftsmanship and attention to detail reflect the unique, innovative spirit of the company’s founder. You can be sure that when you choose a Parker Knoll piece, you are getting something with countless hours of attention, care and craftsman skill poured into it, that embodies the century-long tradition of the Parker Knoll name.

Choosing furniture is one thing, but before you do, you need to think about the overall design of your living space. Here are some things to think about before you make any decisions on what furniture or other items to put in there:

1) Consider the use

Will you be entertaining a lot? Will the room be used for simple rest and relaxation? Is it a place you want your family to gather, play games, or watch television together? Think about how much seating you will need, and whether you have enough space for all of it. If there are going to be less sofas or other seating, think about what other furniture would look nice in the space you have.

2) Consider the space

Look at the shape and area of your living room; get a grasp on the measurements. Tailor your furniture choices to fit the space, so that you can maintain a good “flow” through the room. Most rooms have a natural “focal point” like a window, fireplace, space for the television – how can the furniture fit best around that focal point?

3) Consider the audience

Try to position furniture in such a way that will allow everyone in the room to be able to see and talk to each other. If you’re a close-knit family, make the furniture arrangement reflect that, so that everyone can feel “close” wherever they happen to be sitting.

Finally, and most importantly…

4) Make sure YOU like the design

All of these ideas are supposed to help you create a living room that’s as unique as you are. Make sure that for all of the above considerations, you are taking your own preference into account.

Parker Knoll living room furniture is made with care, and loaded with character and style. Browse our Parker Knoll Living range now to see which unique, specially designed pieces will be able to create the perfect living room space that reflects who you really are.

How to Use Parker Knoll Chair Covers to Revamp Your Living Room

The living room: it’s the one room that most of us especially want to reflect our personality and taste. Or, more accurately, we want it to show our unique style. With the sheer amount of mass-produced furniture flooding the market every year, it’s hard to really know if we’re buying pieces that reflect ourselves, because after all, won’t thousands of other people have the same thing? That’s where Parker Knoll chair covers come in handy.

When you own furniture and other living room items over a long period of time, it is easy for them to drag down the overall feel of your living space. Whether the problem is dull colours, out-of-date style, worn/damaged fabrics or something else, it can be tricky to know what the best course of action to take is. The idea of replacing everything in the room is daunting and expensive, but you should know that it shouldn’t have to come to that.

How simply changing chair covers can transform a room

Even with the simplest change to your furniture, like replacing the chair covers, can work to totally revamp your room, breathing new life into the space. Parker Knoll chair covers are made in a variety of fabrics and styles to suit many tastes. It’s amazing what a new chair cover can do, but it’s important that you consider carefully how exactly to use it best in your living room.

For example, if you’re living room is fairly small, then it’s a good idea to use lighter colours that might help create interesting contrasts. This will generate the illusion of the room being lighter and more spacious.

Try different fabrics for style and budget

Do you like suede fabrics? Are you reluctant to buy them because you also have children or pets that you’re afraid might damage them? Well, faux suede is of a much higher quality these days, and is also more stain resistant and so good for these families. If you’re on a budget, then some plainer patterns will help save money, while still injecting that desired new vibe into your living room.

Avoid materials and fabrics that clash

Considering combinations of furniture materials and fabrics is also important. If you have chrome-finish furniture, then you should avoid floral fabrics, which in inevitably clash and look bizarre. Wooden furniture works well with richer, tapestry-like fabrics, as well as with various leather choices or even silk. A good idea is to take a look at your furniture’s history, and do a bit of research into what would have been a popular choice when it was made. This helps your furniture maintain its original style and appeal.

If your furniture is more modern, however, then it never really hurts to be a bit more adventurous. Try out some different colours and fabrics and see what works. Old and tired furniture saps the life out of any room. It’s amazing how a simple restyle can work wonders to revitalize the space and make it much more desirable to sit in and relax again. Explore our interesting range of Parker Knoll furniture and see if there’s something you think will also brighten up or revamp your living room.
