What is the 18 inch rule for rugs?
The 18 inch rule suggests leaving approximately 18 inches of floor space between the edge of your rug and the walls of the room. This creates a balanced frame around the rug and prevents the space from feeling cramped. That said, it's a guideline rather than a strict requirement. In smaller rooms, you might have less space, and that's perfectly fine. The key is proportion. The rug should anchor your furniture grouping without reaching the walls. In dining rooms, you'll actually want more than the standard 18 inches. Aim for at least 60cm beyond the table on all sides. In living rooms, you can place just the front legs of your sofa and armchairs on the rug, or have all the furniture sitting entirely on it, depending on the size of your rug and room.
How do I stop my rug from moving?
A rug underlay is the most effective way to keep your rug in place. Anti-slip underlays are specifically designed to grip both the floor and the rug, preventing movement and bunching. They also add extra cushioning underfoot and help protect both your rug and your flooring from wear. For hard floors like wood, laminate, or tile, a rubber or felt underlay works brilliantly. If you're placing a rug on carpet, choose an underlay designed for that purpose. Some people use rug tape or gripper pads at the corners, though a full underlay provides better coverage and protection. An underlay also extends the life of your rug by absorbing impact and reducing the friction that causes fibres to break down over time.
