Are round or rectangular tables more space efficient?
In most rooms, a rectangular dining table makes better use of the available floor space, particularly in longer, narrower rooms where a round table would leave awkward gaps at either end. Rectangular tables also tend to seat more people for their overall footprint, making them the more practical choice when capacity matters. That said, space efficiency is not the only consideration: a round table in a square room can feel better proportioned and easier to move around, and the absence of corners means nobody gets a bad seat. Both shapes have genuine merit; it mostly comes down to the geometry of your particular room and how many people you need to seat.
How many people can fit at a rectangular table?
As a general guide, a 120cm rectangular table will comfortably seat four people; 150 to 160cm works well for six; and from 180cm onwards you are into eight-seater territory, with larger tables accommodating ten or more. The key word is comfortably: you want roughly 60cm of table width per person and enough leg room that nobody is nudging their neighbour throughout the meal. Our rectangular dining tables are available across a range of sizes, and if you regularly need to seat larger numbers without committing to a permanently oversized table, it is worth pairing a rectangular design with one of our extending dining tables options for the best of both.
