Which fabric is best for armchairs?
The best fabric depends on how you'll use the armchair. For busy households or homes with pets, we'd suggest tightly woven, easy-care fabrics that stand up to daily use and are simple to keep clean. Polyester and synthetic blends are practical choices as they're stain-resistant and easy to clean. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen offer breathability and a soft feel, though they may require more maintenance. Velvet has grown increasingly popular for its luxurious texture and rich colour depth, and modern performance velvets are surprisingly durable. Check the cleaning code too: 'W' means water-based cleaning, 'S' requires solvent-based cleaners, and 'WS' allows both. If you have young children, consider darker colours or patterns that won't show every mark.
How do I clean a fabric armchair?
Regular vacuuming with an upholstery attachment prevents dirt from embedding into the fibres so aim for once a week if the chair gets heavy use. For spills, blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing, which can spread the stain. Check your armchair's care label before using any cleaning products. For water-safe fabrics (marked 'W'), mix a small amount of mild upholstery cleaner with water, test on a hidden area first, then gently clean the affected spot with a soft cloth. For solvent-only fabrics (marked 'S'), use a specialist upholstery cleaner. Avoid over-wetting the fabric as this can damage the padding underneath. For persistent stains or an annual deep clean, we recommend professional upholstery cleaning to keep your armchair looking its best.
You can also protect your furniture from accidental damage with a Staingard furniture warranty, providing 6 years of protection for stains on fabric; caused by things like food, drink, paint, wax and glue.
