What is the best leather for armchairs?
Full-grain leather is the highest quality option. It's the top layer of the hide with all the natural markings intact, making it durable and developing a beautiful patina over time. Top-grain leather is slightly more processed but still excellent quality and more uniform in appearance. Both are long-lasting investments. Corrected-grain leather has been sanded and treated to remove imperfections, making it more affordable whilst still offering good durability. Protected leather has a sealant coating that makes it easier to clean and more resistant to stains, ideal for busy family homes. Aniline leather is dyed but unsealed, showing the hide's natural character, though it requires more care.
How do I clean a leather armchair?
Dust your leather armchair weekly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent dirt build-up. Every few months, clean it with a slightly damp cloth and a leather-specific cleaner. Avoid household detergents, which can dry out the leather. Always test any product on a hidden area first. After cleaning, apply a leather conditioner to keep the material supple and prevent cracking. This is particularly important in centrally heated homes. Wipe spills immediately with a clean cloth. Don't rub, just blot gently. Keep leather furniture away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight, which can cause fading and drying. For protected leather, maintenance is simpler as the sealant provides a barrier.
